If you've never experienced the enchanting spectacle of fireflies, the Tottokawa Firefly Festival in Okazaki City is a must-visit event that will amaze you. This unique festival, running until June 25, offers a magical glimpse into the natural world of fireflies, specifically the Genji fireflies, which are a symbol of clean, pristine water and the beauty of nature.
What Makes the Tottokawa Firefly Festival Special?
The Tottokawa Firefly Festival is held in the Torikawa area of Okazaki City, known for its clear waters, which are essential for the survival of fireflies. The "Torikawa Hotaru no Sato" area is recognized as one of the "Heisei Famous Water 100 Selections" by Japan's Ministry of the Environment, highlighting its significance and the purity of its environment.
Whether you're a bug fixated kid or adult, this festival promises a memorable experience that highlights the delicate balance of our natural world. Plan your visit, respect the environment, and enjoy the magical dance of the fireflies!
During the festival, the fireflies create an enchanting dance that illuminates the night sky. This natural phenomenon occurs from late May to late June, with peak viewing times between 20:00 and 21:00. The sight of these glowing insects is both mesmerizing and serene, offering a unique opportunity to connect with nature.
Festival Highlights
Firefly Viewing
The main attraction is, of course, the fireflies. Visitors can enjoy the spectacular display along a 2 km stretch of the Torikawa River. The best time to see the fireflies is around 20:00 when they become most active.
Guided Tours
Special guided tours (in Japanese) are available on select dates (June 15, 22, and 23) to enhance your experience and provide more insight into the fireflies and their habitat.
Local Stalls
Throughout the festival, local residents set up stalls, offering a variety of handicrafts, snacks and refreshments, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Fans of Isao Takahata's animated movie "Grave of the Fireflies" (火垂るの墓, Hotaru no Haka) will find a deeper connection, as the fireflies symbolize the transient nature of happiness and the poignant realities of existence. Plan your visit, respect the environment, and immerse yourself in this enchanting spectacle.

Pro Tips
Avoid Weekends. The festival can be extremely crowded on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Weekday visits are recommended.
Dress Appropriately
Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes as paths can be unpaved and bring a light jacket since it can get chilly along the river at night.
Respect the Fireflies
Avoid using flashlights or flash photography to protect the fireflies. Carry any garbage home to keep the area clean.
