Higashi Betsuin is one of Nagoya's most revered temples and is the leading Jodo Shinshu Otani sect Buddhist temple and monk training center in Nagoya and the surrounding region. Higashi Betsuin was established in 1690 and built on the warlord Oda Nobunaga's Furuwatari Castle site.
The Higashi Betsuin Temple precincts come alive on the 8th, 18th, and 28th of each month between 10:00 and 14:00, when the Kurashi, or Morning Market, takes place.
This is the largest morning market in Aichi prefecture, with about 220 stalls selling everything from homegrown vegetables to bread, sweets, miscellaneous goods, and handmade crafts. It is a simple market, but sometimes the simple things in life are best!
