My Adventure at Osukannon's One Piece Paradise
I stumbled upon a real-life piece of the Grand Line last weekend while wandering through Nagoya's bustling Osu district. As a One Piece fan who's followed Luffy and his Straw Hat crew through their quest to find the ultimate treasure, the One Piece, I nearly dropped my shopping bags when I spotted a sign for "Amusement Cafe-Bar WATER7."
For those uninitiated to the pirate-filled world of One Piece (Japan's best-selling manga series), Water 7 is a vibrant canal city in the anime where shipwrights build magnificent vessels. It's where the Straw Hat crew acquired their legendary ship, the Thousand Sunny. And somehow, this iconic location has been reborn in the heart of Nagoya!
Navigating to This Hidden Treasure
Pushing open the door felt like crossing into another dimension. The walls were plastered with wanted posters of notorious pirates, figurines of characters stood guard from every shelf, and episodes played on screens around the bar. I half-expected Franky to burst through the wall shouting "SUPER!" or to find Sanji behind the counter mixing drinks instead of the friendly owner who greeted me.

A Devil Fruit-Worthy Drink Menu
The drink menu alone was enough to make my inner pirate holler with glee. For just 500 berries—er, yen—I could choose from a lineup of character-inspired cocktails. I started with a blue concoction that reminded me of the All Blue that Sanji dreams of finding, followed by something fiery that would make Ace proud.
The bartender, who I soon learned travels as far as Scotland to hand-select his whiskey collection, noticed my excitement and offered me a taste of a rare scotch. Despite my limited Japanese, our shared enthusiasm for One Piece bridged any language gap as he poured me a sample with a knowing smile. When I mentioned Zoro's name, his eyes lit up, and he immediately pointed to a particular bottle.
For an extra ¥100, I upgraded to drinking from a tankard that made me feel like I was celebrating with the crew after defeating a powerful enemy. And had I planned to stay longer, their all-you-can-drink option would have been perfect for a proper pirate feast.
Nakama Spirit Strong Here!
What struck me most wasn't just the decor or the drinks, but the sense of camaraderie that One Piece is famous for. The Japanese concept of "nakama"—comrades who are closer than family—is central to the series, and that spirit was alive in this bar.
"Water 7 is like finding your crew when you're far from home," I overheard a guy from Germany saying, and I couldn't agree more. The owner welcomed everyone like long-lost nakama, regardless of whether they spoke fluent Japanese or just knew how to say "Luffy" and "kanpai." His passion for One Piece transcended any language barriers—when I mentioned Whole Cake Island, he said a few words of approval in English as he excitedly pulled out a themed cocktail he'd created that wasn't even on the menu!
A group next to me hadn't even seen One Piece, but they were having just as much fun. "I don't know anything about this anime," one woman told me, "but the drinks are amazing and everyone's so friendly—it's impossible not to have a good time!"
My visit happened to coincide with another patron's birthday, and I witnessed something truly in the spirit of Luffy's crew: the birthday celebrant received sparkling sake and had sparklers placed in their mouth while everyone sang happy birthday. It was exactly the kind of over-the-top celebration you'd expect to see on the Thousand Sunny!
Not a Theme Bar - A Friend Bar!
WATER7 isn't just a themed bar—it's a meeting place for those who share One Piece's adventure-seeking spirit and those who simply appreciate good drinks in a fun atmosphere. The owner has created something that captures the heart of what makes One Piece unique: it's not just about finding treasure, but about the friends you make along the way.
As I reluctantly left to continue my journey through Nagoya, I couldn't help but think this little corner of the city embodies what Gol D. Roger might have meant when he launched the Great Pirate Era with his famous last words: "My treasure? If you want it, you can have it! Find it! I left everything in that place!"
Except in this case, "that place" is a quirky bar in Osu, and the treasure is an evening you won't forget. Kanpai to that!
