Brace yourself, Nagoya. On Wednesday, November 13, the city is about to get hit with a blistering afrostorm from Atlanta's PUNK BLACK collective. Two of its powerhouse bands, Being Hvman and Howling Star, are storming the NAG for a riotous night of Black Punk at Nagoya's very own Red Dragon, deep in the thick of Ikeda Koen's thumping night district.
Who's Behind the Chaos?
First, a little context: PUNK BLACK isn't just a collective; it's a movement. An Atlanta-born, multi-media mash-up of organizers, artists, punks, and Blerds (Black nerds), PUNK BLACK was launched back in 2015 to create radically inclusive spaces for BIPOC creatives—spaces that have often been denied in the mainstream alt scenes. Since its inception, PUNK BLACK has hosted over 70 events across the U.S., carving out safe spaces for Black outcasts, weirdos, punks, leftists, and everyone in between.
PUNK BLACK's impact stretches far beyond Atlanta, reaching places like Brooklyn, Oakland, Chicago, and D.C.—and now, their sights are set on Japan, where the Japanese scene is ready to welcome them with open arms with a show in Tokyo, two gigs in Osaka - and one right here in Nagoya, the world's largest village.
Being Hvman
Punk Metal Fusion-freaks
If punk and metal had a lovechild, it would be Being Hvman. This humble yet ferocious trio takes the raw energy of punk and collides it with metal's relentless intensity. Being Hvman is an all-out sonic assault. With every riff, they tear through conventions—and occasionally, through the fabric of space and time—melding together anything they want, in any way they want.
Improvisation is their superpower, and they wield it with the precision of a chaotic mastermind. Clad in their signature Hoochie Daddy fits, Being Hvman defies expectations both musically and stylistically. From Ohio to Osaka, they've left a searing mark on every stage they've touched, and on November 13, they'll be hitting the Red Dragon, ready to melt Nagoya's face off.
Howling Star
Four Minds, One Roaring Sound
Also descending on Nagoya is Howling Star. Conceived from the remains of Atlanta's "Tragedy Called Truth," Howling Star is a powerful four-person lineup: two vocalists shredding on guitar, backed by bass and drums. This band's a genre-hopping freight train that pulls you in and spits you out—too much of everything to fit neatly into anything.
Howling Star brings the firepower of their Atlanta upbringing to the front lines in Japan, ready to enlighten the masses and show the world just what's calling them next. If their intense lyrical presence and dual-vocalist dynamism are any indication, the Red Dragon crowd will be in for an evening of chronic catharsis.

Psychedelic Grunge from Nagoya
Local Nagoya band ORACLE offers a unique blend of alternative rock, funk, and grunge. Their sound can be best described as "psychedelic grunge," combining the raw energy of grunge with funk-rock grooves. The group occasionally performs as a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover band, contributing to the Chili-inspired vibe in their original material - albeit with a harder edge.
Despite being around for only a year or two, the band plays gigs constantly, often sharing the stage with acts from diverse genres and bringing their infectious energy to various line-ups across the city.
