A Peaceful Slice of Switzerland in Hoshigaoka
By Doug Breath
Tom's Swiss Cafe is a cozy spot near Higashiyama Koen Station and the Higashiyama Zoo. This hidden gem brings a little bit of Switzerland to the East end of Nagoya, offering an experience that's equal parts charming and cheesy—quite literally.
If you are interested in sitting back and sipping authentic Swiss coffee while nibbling on hot, toasty sandwiches or perhaps a glass of wine with fondue, this is your spot.
Meet the Mysterious Swiss Mister
First—full disclosure—I have known Tom, the man behind the cafe, for over a decade. I spend a lot of time watching him make coffee and drinking it while I idly lay around the porch of his cabin in the Japanese Alps.
So yes, this review is biased.
I can't honestly explain why Tom runs this café because, from all I can see, he must be sitting on a pretty large Swiss bank account! Nonetheless, he dedicates himself to reproducing an authentic corner of Switzerland here in Nagoya.
When not serving the finest cappuccinos Nagoya has to offer, you'll often find him skiing, playing tennis near a lake in the summer, or wandering around Venice, enjoying his leisure time as any true Swiss gentleman of a certain age would.
Tom has lived in Japan for years, but he's retained that rough Swiss mountain charm — complete with a suspiciously detailed knowledge of cheese varieties.
From my perspective, the cafe is, in all probability, a front for a massive Swiss cheese conglomerate — but Tom is too humble or too scared of the cheese mafia to confirm or deny such allegations.
Despite (or perhaps because of) his borderline obsessive love of cheese, coffee, and wine, he's a likable character. His otherwise laid-back manner is quite evident at his cafe, which has the air of a comfortable hideaway. It's a relaxing place for those seeking a break from city life's hectic pace.
The Atmosphere
Popping into Tom's Swiss Café is like entering a small slice of his native Beckenried on the shores of Lake Lucern. The ambiance is calm, well-ordered, and has a smidgen of that particularly efficient... and how shall I put this - "direct," Swiss-German culture.
In this regard, Tom's café is somewhat of a departure from the incredibly efficient yet often obsessively polite service culture we all enjoy in Japan.
Tom's approach is surprisingly laid-back yet attentive, betraying his roots as a country boy who came down from the mountains before embarking on his extensive (and mysteriously remunerative!) adventures abroad.
One of the things I find fascinating about the place is that—and I mean no criticism—Tom actually works when he is there—a stark departure from his often leisurely and lengthy vacations.
I guess being Swiss requires a lot of downtime.
Curiously, the result is a surprisingly charming spot for a piping coffee or a quiet chat, especially if you're on the East end of town.
The Menu
Tom's menu offers a variety of coffee selections and other beverages, including an assortment of Swiss wines and alcohol.
One of the highlights of the menu is the hot-pressed sandwiches filled with Gouda cheese, which is so obviously authentic that I can only imagine how he managed to get it. This is complemented by an assortment of delicious ingredients.
The menu features an assortment of these toasty treats, each packed with flavor—from ham and tomato to pumpkin and even a spicy Mexican cheddar. They won't stuff you, but that's not the point here anyway.
You'll also find some cheese dorias for a snack or lunch — a nod to that Japanese culinary abomination. Yet here they have been reimagined into a delightful mix of creamy cheese and savory toppings —perfect for anyone looking for something a bit more substantial.
For drinks, Tom serves authentic Swiss coffee and hot chocolate (ask for "heisse schokolade" if you want to practice your German). And as the colder months roll in, nothing warms the soul like Tom's exceptional coffee with a shot of Swiss schnapps.
Fondue and Raclette
One of the true delights at Tom's is his authentic Swiss fondue. There is no fake Japanese cheese here—this is the real deal, complete with fresh vegetables and delicious bread for dipping.
Tom also offers a Raclette Cheese Course for those wanting something extra special. Imagine hot, melted Raclette cheese served with potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and bread—pure, unadulterated cheesy goodness.
The fondue and raclette menu items are only available by reservation. They are perfect for a romantic date, a small dinner party, or even a unique celebration. You won't find anything quite like it anywhere else in Nagoya.
Private Gatherings
Looking for a spot for a private occasion? Tom's Café is available for rent in the evenings for more intimate gatherings.
With Tom's carefully selected list of imported wines, it's an ideal place to host a small celebration or to enjoy an upscale yet laid-back evening.
The cafe can accommodate 25-30 guests, making it perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or cozy get-togethers with friends. You can even bring your own food and drinks—just note that the kitchen is off-limits.
