Tsuruma Park History

Tsuruma Park, managed by the city of Nagoya, was established in 1909 and is Nagoya's first municipal park. It is also a National Historic Site known for its cherry blossoms, ranking it among Japan's top 100 cherry blossom viewing spots. The park is officially named "Tsuruma Park." However, there's confusion over its name, with some sources referring to it as "Tsurumai," a discrepancy most likely due to the names of nearby facilities like Tsurumai Elementary School and Tsurumai Station.
The park was created to host the 10th Kansai Prefectural Association Exhibition in 1910, a significant event that attracted many visitors – much more than the population of Nagoya City at the time, estimated to be around 410,000 people. The exhibition saw participation from 28 prefectures and Hokkaido, marking an important moment in the park's history and establishing it as an important cultural and recreational venue in Nagoya.
The event spurred the park's development, creating various facilities such as a zoo, library, and memorial altar commemorating universal suffrage.
Despite its tumultuous history, including a brief occupation by the Allied forces after World War 2, the park has remained a beloved cultural and recreational hub. From its diverse flora, including cherry blossoms, tulips, and irises, to its unique blend of Eastern and Western landscaping, Tsuruma Park offers something for everyone.
