What's Going On Nagoya?
Welcome to Nagoya Buzz, where we ask that question every week. Whether you're a long-time local, a newcomer, or simply curious about our city, you've found your perfect partner in navigating Nagoya. Nagoya Buzz is not just a website; it's a community hub created by and for the people who want to help Nagoya pulse with energy and creativity.
What is Nagoya Buzz?
Nagoya Buzz is the latest iteration of THE ALIEN Magazine, which began in 1990. Although the Nagoya Buzz logo looks like a bee, that is entirely coincidental. In fact, our logo is supposed to look like a smiley-faced alien, which was the original logo of that first publication.
The bee thing was initiated by people who thought it referenced our new name! - and it has unintentionally stuck.
While our name, style, and content have morphed through various forms—from the national print publication Japanzine in the 2000s to the more locally focused NAGMAG—today, Carter Witt and Doug Breath (pronounced Brete') continue the tradition of focusing on what's happening in our city's international scene.
Our Mission
Our mission is clear: to support, inspire, and connect the international community in Nagoya. We are dedicated to covering a wide range of topics—from upcoming local events and restaurant reviews to in-depth features on community profiles and area guides.
But Nagoya Buzz is more than just information; it's interactive. As a subscriber, you can engage in the discussion thread right after each article, adding your voice to our growing community.

Supporting Creativity and Community
Our international community has deep roots. Over the decades, Nagoya's international residents have actively engaged in the arts, theater, live music, and volunteer efforts, including support for post-Fukushima recovery and the annual Walkathon, raising millions of yen for local charities. Now, after the COVID years, Nagoya Buzz aims to help foster this tradition of creativity and support the efforts of everyone who lives here to continue working to make our city a great place to live in and a vibrant place to work and learn.
